3 things to do when youre unprepared for a meeting

3 things to do when youre unprepared for a meeting3 things to do when youre unprepared for a meetingWhether a last-minute meeting pops up halfway through the day, or you simply forgot about one until two minutes before its scheduled to start, being unprepared for one can be a startling feeling. Here are three tips to use when you find yourself in this situation.Think about these three questions ahead of timeAfter writing about being caught unprepared in a meeting with the vice president of her company - and then, how she got back on her feet at the moment with a managers help - career coach and writer Abby Wolfe writes about these questions in The Muse. She explains why you should pose these specific questions to yourself before every work meeting1) Whats my role?2) What do I need to bring?3) What do I want to get out of it?Boiling things down to these three topics can help you get ahead.Figure out who youre meeting withAuthorKevin Daum writes in Inc. that you should research the att endees in an article about how productive people prepare for meetings. There is no real excuse today for not knowing the people with whom you are meeting. Whether its a one on one or a conference table of 10, you should have some idea of who is at the table. Get a list of attendees and Google each one. Check out their Linkedin profile and perhaps even look at them on Facebook to understand who they are and what they bring to the conversation. The time spent up front will not only save time on introductions, but it will give you powerful insights should conflict occur, he writes.Do this if you werent paying attention in the meetingThis can be really embarrassing, but luckily, there are ways to save face.Doing things like preparing for what could happen during the meeting as much as possible, politely saying that you dont have anything else to add (if you dont), and talking about what you do know can really come in handy.

Key Person Clause Essentials in a Recording Contract

Key Person Clause Essentials in a Recording ContractKey Person Clause Essentials in a Recording ContractThe key person clause that appears in a lot of record contracts inspires a certain amount of fear among musicians and prompts some music business lawyers to spend a lot of time (and your money) getting rid of it. But it may not be as badeanstalt as it seems. What Is a Key Member Clause? A key member clause in a record deal(sometimes known as a key person clause) is a clause that states that if a member of the group who is considered to be critical to the overall sound, style, or identity of the group decides to leave, the record label can claim breach of contract, which can result in its cancellation. Often, with this cancellation, the label also discontinues active promotion of the bands earlier releases. In otherbei words, you and whats left of your band are back on the street. While this repercussion may seem pretty major, theres more than one way of looking at it. The G ood News for Musicians This contract feature cuts both ways for musicians. Although the clause gives the label an out if they want to drop you if a key member leaves, it also offers some level of protection. With the key person clause in place, the label cant easily use the sudden departure of your sometimes xylophone player as a reason to cancel your whole dealbecause theyve implicitly admitted that the departure of thexylophone player was not a serious concern. If she were, they would have named her as a key person in the contract. Everything Is Negotiable Another point that musicians sometimes miss when dealing with the key member clause is that just because its in the contract doesnt mean the label will enforce it. When the Kronos Quartet signed its first contract with Nonesuch Records, the label identified both the first violinist, the groups founder, and the cellist, who was extraordinarily talented, young, and beautiful, as key persons. Some years later, the cellist lef t the group for health reasons. But the label not only didnt cancel the contract, they renewed it. Why? Because the group was critically acclaimed, commercially successful and found other excellent cellists to replace the departed original member. The Label Isnt out to Get You Sometimes musicians get a little paranoid about their record company and they assume that the company is somehow out to get them. But record company execs arent inherently evil, at least not most of them. Theyre simply trying to manage their companies profitably. If theres some way that the impact of the departure of a key person can be lessened, most labels will go along with the group and, as with the Kronos Quartet when they lost their original cellist, wont enforce the clause. Taking the Sting out of the Key Person Clause When one or two members of a group are designated as key persons in the recording contract, it can provoke not only fear of the label but also resentment by other band members. Wh y arent they key persons, too? In some instances, groups have solved this problem by asking the record company to include all group members as key persons in the contract. While this may not seem like a good idea now the label has cause to drop the group if anyone leaves it may be a viable solution. Just because it has a contractual right, the labels not going to drop the group if someone they dont consider essential leaves, and it solves the ego-problem. Youre all key members

Robots star in ads, but mislead viewers about technology

Robots star in ads, but mislead viewers about technologyRobots star in ads, but mislead viewers about technologyNowhere is the advance of technology more evident than in the rise of robots and artificial intelligence. From smart devices to self-checkout lanes to Netflix recommendations, robots (the hardware) and AI (the software) are everywhere inside the technology of modern society. Theyre increasingly common in ads, too During the 2019 Super Bowl alone, seven ads aired featuring either robots or AI.Since I began studying human-robot interactions alfruchtwein a decade ago, Ive observed that in most ads, robots typically fall into one of three general categories scary, sad or stupid. All three perpetuate common misconceptions about technologies that are already beginning to play a pivotal role in peoples lives.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreThe fear factorScary robot ads are i nevitable, given the popularity of the sinister robot trope. Advertisers, like Hollywood, embrace scary robot narratives because theyre more dramatic than ones in which robots and humans get along.Fear is Everywhere, a paranoia-inducing 2019 commercial, advertises SimpliSafe home security systems, which use some of the same monitoring technology the ad demonizes. Rather than reminding viewers of their concerns about burglars or basement flooding, the ad highlights robots and AI as the omnipresent danger. A woman in an electronics store asks her friend if hes listening, and a creepy computer voice issues forth from a speaker Always, Denise.SimpliSafes Fear is Everywhere ad.That same ad also highlights a second major type of fear that robots will replace humans. A man watching a sporting darbietung tells his friends, in five years, robots will be able to do your job, and your job and your job, while a robot sitting in the stands listens menacingly, as if affirming the assertion.Halo Top suggests humans only need is ice cream. Then, of course, theres the third trope, of the evil robot intent on harming people. A 2017 Halo Top ice cream ad, for example, functions as a 90-second horror movie, in which a robot force-feeds a woman ice cream, and then casually mentions that everyone she knows is dead. There are real threats to humans from robots and AI. Automation may eliminate millions of jobs and it might create many others that dont yet exist. Most likely, both will happen, as has happened throughout history Elevator operators disappeared and social-media manager positions were created. The threat revolves around who will and who wont be able to adjust or receive training to get the new jobs. But the world is a long way off from robots that portray a version of the Frankenstein Complex, Isaac Asimovs phrase for the human fear that poorly designed mechanical creations might turn against humanity. Robots have no intentions only instructions. They can act as though th ey have feelings, but experience no actual emotion. No one knows if robot emotion or sentience are even possible.Ads that instill fear of technology in humans can present an unrealistic and unhelpful mindset for adapting to the increasing presence of this technology in our lives whether in criminal justice, health care or other areas. Fear can also distract people from properly understanding and planning for ways in which humans can continue to offer meaningful skills and insights beyond the abilities of any machine.Doom and gloomPringles are for everyone sort of.Sad robot ads combat peoples fears about robots while simultaneously eliciting sympathy for them. In a 2019 Pringles ad, a smart device bemoans its lack of hands to stack chips or mouth to eat them. The robots physical limitations reassure viewers of human superiority, and yet the robot is advanced enough to have genuine feelings of sadness.Could a child do your taxes?Turbo Taxs RoboChild perpetuated the myth of robot int elligence in two appearances during the 2019 Super Bowl. RoboChild, which looks like young Haley Joel Osments face stuck on a small robot body, wants to be an accountant, but encounters constant reminders that its in a human world. A person tells RoboChild it isnt emotionally complex enough for the job, correctly distinguishing between the human and robot abilities to feel emotion while sparking viewers sympathy for the robot. However, emotion isnt necessary to fulfill most accounting functions Artificial intelligence already performs a number of financial tasks, many of which require human interaction.Falling to piecesRobots may elend make great insurance agents. The third category of advertising robots doesnt evoke fear or sympathy, but rather ridicule. A 2018 State Farm ad, for instance, pokes fun at a rival agency that has begun using cheap robot agents instead of human ones. The employee robot is a mess, spurting both hydraulic fluid and gibberish. In stupid robot ads, robots ha ve cognitive constraints, sometimes in addition to physical ones. These ads are at least somewhat realistic, as robots and AI have fundamental limitations even the system that can beat an international Go champion isnt much good at anything else. Even so, portraying robots as a collection of laughable, malfunctioning parts undermines the seriousness of their implications. Humans who are laughing at dumb machines may not think clearly or prepare actively for a future in which even limited robots and AI are key players.Amazons Super Bowl ad featuring Alexa fails initially seemed like a collection of stupid robot highlights. A collar that allows a dog to order an entire truckload of food reminds viewers of Alexas that interpreted TV news or casual conversations as directives to buy products. It rightly makes the point that no product is perfect but it subtly demonstrates the power of Amazons technologies, which in the ad shut down an entire continental power grid by accident. The techn ology itself is portrayed as dysfunctional and something over which we can all have a laugh. However, the failures illustrate that the flaws lie in human efforts of concept, design or programming. Laughing at the machines can distract people from that deeper insight, or from considering who should be responsible when automation-enabled disaster strikes.Commercials arent likely to encourage viewers to seek out legitimate information about new technologies. Their main job is to sell a product or service, not contribute to an informed society. But they need not perpetuate generalized and unrealistic fears. The more misdirection people absorb about robots and AI, the less capable they will be of understanding and managing the real implications of technological advances.Joelle Renstrom, Lecturer of Rhetoric, Boston UniversityThis article is republished from The Conversation under a Creative Commons license. New neuroscience reveals 5 rituals that will make you happy

New neuroscience reveals 5 rituals that will make you happyNew neuroscience reveals 5 rituals that will make you happyYou want to be happy. Unfortunately, yur brain is leid always in a cooperating kind of mood. What gives?Honestly, happiness is elendlage a helpful goal. Yeah, you heard me. Its too vague and abstract. Ask people to define happiness and youll either get unhelpful, cliche answers or it will quickly devolve into a 2AM-dorm-room-philosophy-discussion. And plenty of research shows were not always very good at predictingwhat makes us happy. But ur brain tries.Hard. Its a natural pattern-recognition machine, looking for what works and what doesnt, generalizing experience, making predictions and registering feedback.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moraBut sometimes it makes a wrong turn, we develop bad habits and we dont even know what street happy is on anymore. We get into a downward spiral thats no fun and the world needs that about as much as it needs another true crime podcast. The good news is we actually have a lot of control over our happiness - if we can get past that vague word and think about the concrete actions to take to get there. Studies show40% of our happinessis within our control. (If that doesnt sound like a lot, think back to school - 40% is the difference between an A and an F.)So by doing the right things we can form better habits and create an upward happiness spiral. This is backed by a very serious pinky swear from yours truly. But dont trust me. Lets get the specifics from an expertalexanderplatz korbschlgeris a neuroscientist at UCLA in the departeement of psychiatry and author ofThe Upward Spiral Workbook. Were gonna break down some of what Alex recommends and learn what your grey matter really needs in order to maximally increase smile production.Lets get to itChallenge Unhelpful ThoughtsThat sounds a little weird but the wording is quite deliberate. When were feeling sad we get a little too focused on what is true and not what is helpful.Plenty of stuff is true. Cancer is true. Youre gonna die one day is true. Is an excessive amount of time thinking about it helpful if happiness is your goal?We think happiness is about money or love or success but the truth is your happiness is fruchtwein determined by the thoughts in your head because thats what has your attention the vast majority of the time. Now you cant control what thoughts pop up but you can decide what is helpful and choose not to give the unhelpful thoughts any more attention than they deserve. And the other big aufgabe we have with thoughts is just taking them way too seriously. Theyre suggestions. Possibilities. But theyre not gospel. Thoughts are often your lower brain talking. You need to get your prefrontal cortex on the case to examine them rigorously before you start acting on silly fears and anxieties. So listen to your thoughts - bu t dont necessarily believe them. Dont run with them until your brains Quality Control Department has signed off.FromThe Upward Spiral WorkbookBut your thoughts are just thoughts- the whisperings of your limbic system and your striatum. Thoughts are something you have, but they are not who you are. You are not your limbic system. You are not your striatum. Identifying, acknowledging, and reframing unhelpful thoughts will be something well revisit throughout this book. Taking these small steps helps the prefrontal cortex get a runaway limbic system back under control (Ochsner et al., 2004)All that is fine and dandy but how do we identify thoughts that are unhelpful? Luckily, Alex rounded up the usual suspects1)Black and White Thinking100% good and 100% evil only exist in superhero movies. Frankly, sometimes it would beniceif life was this clear, but it aint. And when it comes to your mood, youll be a lot happier if you realize there are heaping piles of nuance to most things.2)Unreali stic ExpectationsDid I say this blog post will make you happy immediately and forever? No. But if youre assuming that, guess who is gonna be disappointed? You. (And me, honestly.) Cynicism is bad but a little skepticism is essential. Consistently unrealistic expectations are a great way to make sure thateverythingin life sucks.3)Selective AttentionIf your brain is always looking for the negative, trust me, youre gonna find it. Most of happiness is perspective. You could read this post and say, Oh my god, this is too much to do Or you can say, Wow, there are so many ways for me to increase my happiness Same facts, different perspective. And they produce very different feelings.4)Disqualifying the PositiveSometimes we go into problem-solving mode and focus only on what is broken. But if you stay in this frame all the time its a one way trip to the world of Zoloft. Plenty of good things happen and you need to appreciate them. Nobody has ever said taking things for granted is a good ide a. Life could always be worse - but its not. So give that its due.5)Predicting the FutureThis will never work or Theyre going to think Im stupid. You dont know the future. So dont act like you do. (But if you really do, please email me tomorrows lottery numbers. Thanks.)7)Should thoughtsThis is a big one. I suggest banning the word should from your vocabulary. But sheshould Its usually just an insistence that the world bends to your will and is a great way to amplify frustration. (For more on the inherent evils of should clickhere.)Make a list of your most common unhelpful thought patterns. (Having a friend assist you can be good - and humbling.) Labeling these thoughts is powerful. Give them silly names. And next time they hijack your brain, challenge them. Dont beat yourself up. Just play a game of catching yourself in the act, label the thought, and then consider more helpful ways to look at the problem. This is an absurdly powerful habit to get into.(To learn more about how you can lead a successful life, check out my bestselling bookhere.)Okay, lets get outta your head. Too much going on in there already. A big part of life actually takes place outside of it, believe it or not. And if you want to increase happiness, your brain cant treat life like a spectator sport. Youre gonna need toDo More StuffDealing with unhelpful thought patterns is the hallmark of CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) and its the single most proven method for boosting mood and reversing depression. But another very powerful scientific technique is Behavioral Activation Therapy. And, frankly, thats a really fancy psychology term for do more stuff.FromThe Upward Spiral WorkbookYour actions, whether intentional or unintentional, have consequences for the activity and chemistry of key neural circuits. A fact that you can take advantage of to create an upward spiral. This idea is exploited by one of the most effective treatments for depression behavioral activation therapy. Behavioral act ivation focuses on changing unhelpful behaviors that contribute to depression and incorporating more helpful ones. This type of approach has been shown to alter the activity in the emotion regulation, motivation, and habit circuits in the brain- the medial prefrontal cortex, orbitofrontal cortex, and dorsal striatum, respectively (Dichter et al., 2009).We associate depression with lethargy and happiness with energy - accurately. But its a two-way street. A feedback loop. If youre active and doing things, youre less likely to be bogged down ruminating. And if youre idle, it can be easy to dwell on the negative. So you need to get out there and accomplish some big, long-term audacious goals to be happy, right?Wrong. This is a common mistake we make. Big goals are great, but the research confirms the clicheits the little things. Lots of little positives are better for happiness that occasionally bagging an elephant.Arrange your life so that you have lot of little positives coming your way, and that you take the time to appreciate them. And the best way to make sure that happens is todo more stuff. You want good karma? Well, for the non-Sanskrit speakers among us, karma literally translates as action. You have to do good things to have good stuff come back your way.So what kinda stuff should you be doing more of? Alex has a list of stuff your brain likesEnjoyable stuff News flash - doing fun things can lead to fun.Achievement stuff Defeat your goals in single combat and feel like a conquering hero.Meaningful stuff When was the brde time you did volunteer work? Or just helped someone?Physical stuff Exercise. Not only keeps you alive, but its likemiracle grow for your brain.Social stuff We use solitary confinement to punish people, dont we?Be specific. Tailor your do-more-of-this-list to you, personally. What do you enjoy but dont do as often as you like? What makes you feel competent, accomplished, and successful? Now put those things on your calendar. Not metaphoric ally. Schedule them for the coming week. Right now. Cmon. Chop, chop. Get a friend involved to hold you accountable and you can make two brains happier.(To learn the 4-step morning ritual that will make you happy all day, clickhere.)Excuse me for repeating myself but one of the above five stuffs-to-do deserves special attention - because it is the single greatest contributor to happinessGet SocialWhat happens when you study the happiest people around and analyze what they have in common? Researchers did just that. There was a clear answer to what differentiated these people from everyone else. And it wasnt money, smarts, age, gender or race.It was strong relationships. If you want to keep your brain happy, be clear on who your support network is. Know who matters and nurture those relationships. So who isyourinner circle?Aaaaaaand this is where your mind goes blank, so Alex has some questions to help youWho appreciates you or thinks highly of you, whether or not you agree with them?W ho is there to help you out if needed?Who can you call, text or visit for emotional support?Who is good with giving you advice or helping you make decisions?Who do you like spending time with?Who can you do activities with?Write the names down. Yeah, now. This is critical Defcon-1 type stuff right here, bubba. Make a list. (If you want to use colored markers and put glitter on the list and title it MY BESTEST FRIENDS IN THE WHOLE WIDE WORLD I wont stop you.)Relationship may be a noun but for you and me its a verb. You want to check in with those people. Regularly. What kinda check-ins does your brain like? Science has answers.FromThe Upward Spiral WorkbookThe best thing to do is talk with the person in real life or meet up for an activity (Sherman, Michikyan, Greenfield, 2013). The next best thing is talking on the phone, which is better than texts or emails. Seeing someone and hearing their voice activates your mirror neuron system in ways that texting cant match. Now go down your list and start sending some texts. Schedule activities or hang-outs if possible. And when you see people, touch them. Dont go all Kevin Spacey on people but research showsphysical contactis much more important than you think.Want to make this logistically easier and even more powerful? Be part of a group that meets regularly.FromThe Upward Spiral WorkbookGroups can not only help you feel better but also make you feel like youre more in control of your life (Greenaway et al., 2015). Joining a group helps reduce symptoms of depression and can even prevent it in the first place (Cruwys et al., 2013). And it unfortunately works the other way too if you leave a supportive group, you can increase your risk for depression (Seymour-Smith, Cruwys, Haslam, Brodribb, 2017).And I wanna keep it real, so lets cover the less-happy-cheery side of things too not all social time is good time. Some people are jerks. Another way to boost your happiness is to break social ties with toxic folks.FromThe Upward Spiral WorkbookResearch shows that sometimes it can be beneficial to break social ties (Dingle, Stark, Cruwys, Best, 2015). Other people reinforce our habits, including our social and emotional habits. So if you dont like those habits or the feelings those people trigger, change the people you surround yourself with.Think of your social life like a bonsai tree. You need to water it and fertilize it - but you also need to trim it to keep it healthy.(To learn the 4 harsh truths that will make you a better person, clickhere.)Now some things are not an easy change. Youve probably been trying to improve some areas of your life for years and have shown as much progress as a blind man in an art appreciation class. So how can we work with our brains to break bad habits?Slay Unhelpful Habits - GentlyIve already posted a lot about the science ofbreaking bad habits and creating good ones. But what are the neuroscience-y bits here that often get neglected when we try to improve habits ?Feelings.Often, discussion of habit-making and breaking is mechanical. And your brain isnt very mechanical. When youre trying to quit bad habits you often get critical with yourself which leads to bad feelings that make you cave and go back to your old ways. Now self-criticism does activate the mistake region of the brain to help us regulate our behavior. But it can also easily lead to bad moods. So lets activate a different networkInstead of self-criticism, tryself-reassurance.FromThe Upward Spiral WorkbookSelf-criticism is one means of activating the prefrontal cortex to try to regulate the limbic system, and its linked to activation of the anterior cingulate- the mistake region of the brain (Longe et al., 2010). But this pattern of thinking can get in the way of making positive change, particularly if youre feeling down and demotivated. By contrast, self-reassurance uses the parts of the PFC that more directly regulate the emotional limbic system. It also activates the insula, the part of the brain that feels things and is linked to empathy. Self-reassurance therefore helps with making positive changes. So you can either feel your emotions empathically and start to make a change or, through old coping habits, avoid feeling them and stay on the same course. The choice is up to you.How do we do that? Ironically, think less about your mistakes and more about the qualities of yourself you like best. Feeling good about yourself gives you the energy and confidence to keep improving.FromThe Upward Spiral WorkbookResearch has shown that habits can be easier to change if you focus not on your worst qualities but on your best ones (Epton, Harris, Kane, van Koningsbruggen, Sheeran, 2015). Think about what you like most about yourself what qualities of yours would you not want to change? This type of focus is rewarding and activates the nucleus accumbens (Dutcher et al., 2016).Beating yourself up wont make you better. Liking yourself will.(To learn how to have a long a wesome life, clickhere.)Okay, now is the part where you thank me for all Ive done for you.Huh? Me? Selfish? Jeez, Louise. No, this will benefityou, not meMore Gratty-toodRemember when I said the bulk of happiness is perspective? A lot of people question that one. (For the record, I am right and they are wrong.)Gratitudeis the best example. It feels good.Reallygood. But we forget that. We take things for granted. Think about what matters most to you in life. Loved ones, home, career, health. Now imagine losing them all. Go full-Biblical-Job-story.Now dont just think it,feelit for a second. Losing all those things that mean so muchOkay, thats enough. Back to reality you havent lost anything. But other peoplearein that situation. You arent one of them. Feel lucky? You should.Did you just gain anything? Not really. Did you have to accomplish anything? Nope. Nothing really changed - except yourperspective. You looked around and realized how good you have it. Thats all it takes. You didn t need to buy anything, do anything or accomplish anything. You just had to appreciate what you have and be thankful for it to get a boost.FromThe Upward Spiral WorkbookGratitude can decrease depression symptoms as well as stress in general, and leads to increased perception of social support (Wood, Maltby, Gillett, Linley, Joseph, 2008). It improves self-esteem and psychological well-being (Lin, 2015). It can even improve your physical health and the quality of your sleep (Hill, Allemand, Roberts, 2013 Wood, Joseph, Lloyd, Atkins, 2009). Gratitude has so many benefits because it affects a wide variety of brain regions and chemicals. Importantly, gratitude has the power to activate the dopamine system, specifically the brain stem region where dopamine is produced (Zahn et al., 2009).Oh, and that gratitude thing is even nicer if you express it to other people. (Contemplating doomsday scenarios alone in your head is great but telling others thank you is less likely to make you cry and wet yourself.)FromThe Upward Spiral WorkbookGratitude increases our sense of connection with others. Studies of gratitude have shown that it activates the same medial prefrontal regions that we utilize to understand the perspective of other people and to act compassionately (Fox, Kaplan, Damasio, Damasio, 2015). Part of the reason gratitude can help you feel more connected to others is that in recognizing what you are grateful for, you must acknowledge what you need. And in acknowledging what you need, you become aware of the needs of others too. In addition, many of the benefits of gratitude for others are mediated by the oxytocin system (vanOyen Witviliet, et al., 2018). This is an upward spiral, as gratitude facilitates connection with others and connection with others facilitates gratitude. So write a thank you letter. (Or email. Or text.) You dont even have to send it if you feel awkward. It will make you feel good. In fact, this actually showed effects on the brain formont hs.FromThe Upward Spiral WorkbookOne study asked participants to write gratitude letters and found that it changed gratitude-related activity in their anterior cingulate cortex even several months later (Kini et al., 2016). The anterior cingulate region generally responds to self-relevant stimuli. Thus, as you practice being grateful, positive aspects of your life suddenly become more relevant to you. You wont have to look for them so hard, because your brain will be automatically looking for you.But its better if youdosend that letter. Itll improve your relationship. Itll make two people happy. Heck, itll make me happy as well, so thats three for the price of one.(To learn how to deal with passive-aggressive people, clickhere.)Okay, weve learned a lot. Now is the part where we round everything up and I typically mention one more enticing thing so that you actually read to the bottom.Yes, there will be an enticing thing. So you should read to the bottom.Sum UpHeres how neuroscience c an make you happyChallenge Unhelpful Thoughts Anytime youre lost in negative thought, dont ask yourself if its true, ask if it is helpful.Do More Stuff More little good things beat few big great things when it comes to happiness. So do more things to get more results. Karma = action.Be Social No man is an island. (At the very least, you are an archipelago.)Slay Unhelpful Habits Thinking about what you like about you is the first step to building a better you.More Gratty-tood You dont need to buy anything or do anything to feel happier. You just need to appreciate what you already have.Ever have something terrible happen and you just laugh? As if for a second, its not your life its a comedy youre watching and the worst thing imaginable just happened to the poor protagonist? This is a great habit to develop. Because years later when we remember those terrible moments what do we do? Often, we laugh. Theyre the funny, embarrassing stories we tell.So laugh now. Your brainloves humorand it eases pain. We need to take life seriously when making decisions, but when we cant affect outcomes its healthier to take a big picture view. Think of how good a story this will be down the line.FromThe Upward Spiral WorkbookHumor is rewarding and enjoyable, and thus activates the dopamine-rich nucleus accumbens along with the brain stem region that produces dopamine (Mobbs, Greicius, Abdel-Azim, Menon, Reiss, 2003). In addition, humor activates motivational parts of the prefrontal cortex, as well as the amygdala (Bartolo, Benuzzi, Nocetti, Baraldi, Nichelli, 2006). This helps to maintain the important balance between the prefrontal cortex and limbic system that is so essential to long-term well-being.Does this all seem like a lot to do? Gotcha - thats the wrong perspective, remember? Instead, try, Look at how many ways there are to be happier Now thats more like it.You dont have to do it all. Depression Is Making Unemployment Longer

Depression Is Making Unemployment Longer Depression Is Making Unemployment Longer Depression and anxiety create a destructive cycle for job seekers, making it harder to find a job.Soroush Ghaderi was a confident young engineer. He worked at Sun Microsystems, one of the giants of Silicon Valley, where he had been on staff for 10 years, almost his entire career since college. As Sun’s fortunes faded, the QA engineer survived 13 or 14 rounds of layoffs before luck caught up with him and he was laid off with thousands of other employees in April 2009. He called it a blow to his attitude, but he knew it was coming and maintained faith in his abilities and the prospects for a short job search. In fact, he considered unemployment an opportunity. He had 60 days left on staff at Sun and severance coming after that: plenty of time to find a new, better job.Fast-forward to April 2010, Ghaderi had sent out hundreds of resumes, been on dozens of interviews and received zero job offers. Ghaderi, once cocksure and positive in his demeanor, was blowing it on job interviews. “T he answers to technical questions weren’t as easy for me, and I was told by a couple of companies that they didn’t think my programming knowledge was strong enough,” he said. “In an interview, you have maybe five or 10 minutes to answer a question. They ask you to write some code on the board. If you’re not doing it day in and day out, it’s going to take you a little longer to get the exact syntax. That’s what was getting difficult.”His confidence wasted and depression raging, “it got to a point where I knew I wasn’t going to get an offer before I even went to the interview,” he said. “Looking back now, I realize that my depression and negativity was probably a factor in some of my interviews.”Ghaderi was trapped in a destructive cycle common among the unemployed - depression and negativity were making it harder for him to get a job, which compounded his depression and negativity, and so on.Depression, anxiety and malaise aren’t just a case of the blues to “snap out of,” said Deb Brown, a cognitive behavioral psychologist. The condition will sap your confidence and impact your ability to think and act, making it difficult to sell yourself as the best and brightest candidate for a job.Time and RoutineFor most, the length of time it takes to find a job and unmet expectations make matters worse. “The duration of time that people are dealing with is probably going to be much longer than they thought when they first lost their jobs.”Brown, who has experience coaching job seekers to climb out of depression and improve their presentation skills, said it’s critical for people who have been unemployed for long periods of time to continually check their attitudes. This, of course, is far easier said than done, which is why a close network of friends, family and colleagues is key. The time people tend to want to withdraw is exactly the time they need people around them to provide support, perspective and more than a little cheerlead ing.“It is very common for people when they start feeling down to withdraw, and that unfortunately is the very last thing that someone out of work should be doing,” Brown said. “Stay out there, stay networking, [even though] that’s hard when you’re starting to feel down and hopeless.”Job seekers should also work to maintain a routine based in part on business best practices. “It is extremely important for those who have been out of work for an extended period of time to create mission statements and modified business plans in order to breathe new life into their situation,” said Jeffrey Sumber, a licensed psychotherapist and career development coach. “I encourage people to spend at least three hours a day, each day, doing things toward getting hired. Three hours is a huge amount of time that needs to be factored into one’s schedule, ideally in the morning.”Publicist Jeremy Belitsos, who faced his own yearlong stint of unemployment, agreed that routine and takin g care of yourself are critical. Belitsos recommends working out, getting up early (“Getting up late seriously makes for a lazy day”) and finding some kind of work within your field. “Constantly interning and getting experience within your field, even if it’s weekend contract work you find over the Internet, has obviously good implications for keeping your work samples and references fresh,” said Belitsos.Confidence BoostAfter feeling out of practice and a few steps behind the pack, Ghaderi decided in mid-2010 to sharpen his programming skills - in Perl, specifically. But what he found in class was not only new information but also confidence. “I am a fairly good programmer, and being in class where I was able to compare myself to 30 other students gave me some confidence.”With a brighter personal outlook, new skills and a slightly improving job market, Ghaderi received not one but two job offers in the fall of 2010, just a few weeks before his unemployment benefits w ere set to expire.Of the two jobs he was offered, Ghaderi decided to take the one that paid less but was full time as opposed to the contract-to-permanent opportunity offered by another company. The firm he is now working at is smaller than he is used to, but offers a lot of opportunity.Still, Ghaderi is not letting his guard down: “I still look at job sites,” he said, “checking out the skill sets they’re looking for, making sure that I don’t slack off on any of those things - in case something goes wrong again.”

Find out If You Are Qualified to Be a Federal Agent

Find out If You Are Qualified to Be a Federal Agent Find out If You Are Qualified to Be a Federal Agent Among law enforcement careers, jobs with the federal government - especially as federal agents - are some of the most-sought after careers within criminal justice and criminology in the United States.   Many, if not most, people who consider criminology jobs ultimately have some designs on obtaining a federal law enforcement career, and with good reason. Federal jobs have great health and retirement benefits, as well as good pay. They also offer opportunities to live all ?over the country and even the world. And, of course, with the popularity of so many movies and television series that feature special agents, they just seem cool. Before you get too excited about becoming a G-man or woman, though, you should pause to consider whether or not youre qualified to be a federal agent. Police officer jobs are hard enough to get, what with the lengthy background investigation and academy training. For the most part, though, they do not require the level of education or experience that a federal law enforcement agent career typically does. Beginning with the Basics The first consideration when determining your eligibility for a federal law enforcement career should be whether or not you can even submit an application. Just to be able to apply, you need to be a U.S. citizen, hold a valid drivers license and be between the ages of 23 and 37. Emphasis on Education Perhaps one of the most stringent qualifications to be a federal agent is the education component.   Whereas the majority of police departments across the United States do not require a college degree, most federal agencies not only require a degree  but prefer agents to hold advanced degrees.   Depending on the type of crime you hope to investigate, a minimum of a bachelor’s degree â€" and preferably a master’s degree - in fields such as finance and accounting, computer systems, or criminology will be necessary. While it is possible to land a job as a federal agent without a degree, it is generally accepted that a college education is a de facto requirement. Experience Expected Even with a degree, you’re not going to qualify for a job right out of college.   Federal agents take on complex investigations, and candidates need to have the kind of experience that demonstrates their ability to take on the job. Typically, agencies want to see at least 3 years of other professional experience. Necessary prior work history can include prior law enforcement work, especially as a detective or investigator; military experience; or other work that demonstrates investigative or tactical experiences. Strong Focus on the Physical The education and experience components are tough, and so are the physical requirements. Federal law enforcement instruction includes intense physical fitness training, and while a large portion of the job is not necessarily active, there are plenty of physical rigors associated with any law engagement job. Federal agencies have strict physical fitness standards you are expected to meet before you can be considered for employment.   Get in shape and stay in shape to make sure you can meet the minimums. Don’t Let Your Background Break You The importance of keeping your background clean prior to applying for a career as a federal agent cannot be understated. Your past is going to be scoured, and you’ll be subjected to a polygraph exam to look for any undetected crimes or other problems in your past that might disqualify you for a job. While you’re working toward meeting the minimum qualifications, be sure to avoid any problematic behaviors. Worth the Work Landing a career as a federal agent is a difficult prospect, and may be too daunting for some. There are lots of rewards that come with the job for those who are willing to put in the work, though. If you think you can meet the minimum requirement to become a federal agent and make it through the hiring process, you can look forward to a long and rewarding career

How to Interview like a Professional

How to Interview like a Professional How to Interview like a Professional How to Interview like a Professional Fleschner If you want a guaranteed laugh, ask an HR professional about their interviewing and recruiting disasters.Tales of job seekers showing up on the wrong day, sweating profusely while failing to make eye contact throughout or walking in wearing flip flops and a tank top will flow forth. But the conversation turns more somber if you ask the same HR professional about the gaffes or improper behavior that he or she has witnessed from interviewers themselves. Hiring is No Laughing Matter Whats the reason for this difference? It has to do with the stakes. A job seeker who performs badly on a given interview can shake it off, chalk it up to experience and resolve to do better next time. No harm, no foul. But an interviewer doesnt enjoy that luxury, since a bad interview can lead to a costly hiring mistake or worse, invite legal action. As The Essential HR Handbook author Sharon Armstrong points out, inexperienced or unprofessional interviewers frequently commit many of the same off-putting errors as job seekers, including taking phone calls, checking emails or openly texting in the middle of interviews. Of greater concern, however, are interviewers who ask inappropriate interview questions. This is a big no-no, she says. I often hear about questions involving age, marriage, plans for children and child care arrangements. Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 protects individuals against employment discrimination, and even small businesses need to be careful not to run afoul of the law. Knowing how to hire smart says Melanie Berkowtiz, Esq., is a must for any employer to avoid liability for discrimination to maintain a legal hiring process. Sharlyn Lauby, president of ITM Group and creator of the popular HR Bartender blog, emphasizes that these rules dont only apply to formal sit-down interviews. When Ive interviewed in the past for human resources roles, Im often scheduled for very informal interviews with department managers, she says. But even in these informal chats, Ive been asked inappropriate questions about my age, if Im married, how many kids I have, etc. The critical point, Lauby says, is that anyone who is conducting interviews, whether an HR rep, a manager or business owner, needs to be trained on what questions can and cant be asked of prospective hires. Interviewing No-Nos to Avoid Career Directors International president Laura DeCarlo suggests the following as some of the more common interviewing mistakes she comes across: 1. Not reading the resume. Read the resume ahead of time to familiarize yourself with the candidate, identify potential red flags (like date gaps) youd like to explore during the interview and specific job skills you may want to know more about. A good resume review should help you formulate questions designed to get the most out of the candidate. 2. Not planning questions in advance. Trying to conduct an interview off the cuff is a bad idea. Always prepare a list of interview questions that should generate the information you want to know from a candidate. This will help you avoid the mistake of realizing after the fact that you didnt get what you needed from the interview. 3. Dominating the conversation. An essential part of knowing how to interviewis to ask your questions, then sit and listen. One of the biggest mistakes unprepared interviewers make is to talk too much during the interview, whether about the job, the company or themselves, and failing to give candidates the opportunity to reveal important information. 4. Not asking follow-up questions. Even good candidates are not always the best interviewees. Nerves get the best of all of us sometimes. Thats why its important for interviewers to take the initiative to draw out candidates who respond with brief or generic answers. Ask for specific examples or additional information. 5. Taking small talk into dangerous territory. Unskilled or nervous interviewers may try to break the ice by asking a candidate about something inappropriate, like whether he or she has children. Even when done with innocent intentions, these personal questions lead into hazardous waters. Better to stick to safer topics for small talk like performance questions, such as How did you get into this field? or What led you to our company? 6. Not checking references. Always ask candidates for references before they leave. This will show whether they are prepared for the request and confident about their references. Then, if youre interested, definitely do some reference checking some great interviewees wont necessarily be great employees while other nervous seekers will make great employees. Thats why its important to check them out. As DeCarlo says, while a bad interview can be funny, a bad hire rarely is. A hiring mistakecan cost companies by lowering staff morale, customer satisfaction and loyalty, as well as bottom-line profits. Which is why you owe it to yourself to be the most prepared, confident interviewer possible.

5 Tips on Working a Job Fair - Real or Virtual

5 Tips on Working a Job Fair - Real or Virtual Working a Job Fair - Real or Virtual 5 Tips on Working a Job Fair - Real or Virtual Career expo recruitment event jobapalooza Whatever you call it, a job fair is a roomful of mutual potential: employers looking for new hires, and job hunters hoping to be hired. Unlike more conventional job-search methods, the job fair - be it real or even online, or virtual - guarantees a receptive audience for your resume and personal sales pitch. But your warm reception won't last long if you aren't professional and well prepared. Why a Job Fair? Employers sponsor or attend job fairs because they're a good way to meet a lot of job seekers in a much shorter time span than it takes tosolicit resumes, conduct phone screens, and arrange face-to-face interviews. A job fair may be made up of dozens of employers together in a huge expo facility, a single organization recruiting for a certain type of position, or corporate recruiters setting up on a college campus to fill internships or entry-level jobs. Sometimes, these events are held online andcalled virtual job fairs. Theybring employers and job seekers together via email and instant messaging. Some even use avatars - graphical representations of actual people - as part of the online interactive process. One company that offers virtual job fairs, McGuire Global Recruitment, cites the travel savings for employers and the confidentiality for job seekers as chief advantages of the virtual fair. Whether you're a long-time veteran of the workforce or an inexperienced college student, you need to be as ready to work a job fair as if you were preparing for a job interview. To fully prepare for a job fair, follow these five tips: Do your pre-fair research. Learn what you can about the companies that will be represented at the fair by looking at their web sites, searching online for news and blog postings, and reading the biographies of their senior executives. If there will be a lot of companies at the fair, narrow your choices to those that best fit your goals and values. Prepare and rehearse your pitch. Craft a powerful verbal sales pitch that summarizes the value and abilities you can offer an employer. To get started, review your resume to pick out all the valuable skills, talents, experience, and education you bring to the table. Then, decide which of these qualifications will be most relevant to the employer(s) you're targeting. It may also help to rehearse (if it's a live job fair) and revise your pitch. If it's a live job fair, dress conservatively, but comfortably. You will be one of many job seekers, and like it or not, employers will be comparing your appearance directly to the others'. So, dress as you would for an interview. Lean toward a conservative outfit, preferably a suit. Keep accessories simple, and be neatly groomed to project a professional impression. Have copies of your resume and business card ready. Decide if you want to use one general resume that can apply to several positions, or use two or three different versions, each emphasizing a different aspect of your qualifications. Either way, bring plenty of copies to a live career or job fair, and, as always, make sure every version is 100% error-free. In addition, it's a great idea to get some business cards printed ahead of time, containing your name, contact information, and a brief statement of your qualifications or experience. At the job fair, give each person you meet a card so they have a portable reminder of how to contact you, and a handy place to jot down notes about you. For virtual fairs, you may be asked to submit a resume beforehand, which boosts your chances of having one of the employers in attendance contact you. Follow up. Within one to two business days, follow up with any employer that interests you andhas a copy of your resume. This is a subtle way ofkeeping your name fresh in a hiring manager's or HR representative's mind. Send handwritten notes to people you spoke with, thanking them for their time and reiterating your interest in working for the company. This could also be a good practice after a virtual job fair since it allows you to get a bit more personal in what was otherwise a non-personal encounter. Even if it doesn't directly advance your career, a job fair offers a venue to get solid practice promoting yourself and creating a positive impression. It's a great way to hone your interviewing skills, check out your competition, and refine your business etiquette. Plan ahead, do your homework, and prepare yourself for success before you walk into (or log into) the job fair. Have you ever attended a job fair? What advice do you have for other job seekers? Share your thoughts with us.

Avoiding Exit Wounds when Leaving your Job

Avoiding Exit Wounds when Leaving your Job Avoiding Exit Wounds when Leaving your Job Job transition is a crucial process in any profession or career path, and, if you are to avoid exit wounds, (such as being fired or accepting an unsuitable job as you have no alternatives) it should not be left to chance. Where possible, leaving your job should be carefully orchestrated and should be planned months in advance of it happening as part of your long-term career strategy. The benefits of this more engineered approach to career transition include things like: Being able to leave your current firm on your own terms, Having the time to generate more career options and find the ideal job, Being in a stronger bargaining position with potential new employers, Being able to secure more favorable terms and, of course, the all important higher salary In this article, we talk about some of the processes that you can adopt to ensure that you are able to leave your job in a way that enables it to become a stepping stone to the next stage of your career and avoid those exit wounds that can seriously hinder your future employment prospects. Rule 1: Getting a job is easier when you have a job Employees who are currently in a role are generally more employable than those who are between roles, so avoid leaving a job without securing a new job. This may be easier said than done as you cant control if you are fired or laid off. Yet, there are strategies that you can adopt to help you stay more in control of your career â€" so you are more likely to be applying for jobs while in post- and these are: Try to avoid resigning in haste, usually as a result of some workplace grievance. Try and get a transfer, try and work it out or start applying for a new job, but dont just bail out. Hold your nerve, maintain focus and plan. Also, be aware of signs that your job may be at risk, and never bury your head in the sand. Engage and ask questions during monthly company briefings. Always know the financial position of the company and, more importantly ,your department, as well as the market. If there is good evidence to suggest that the company may be in decline and there is a risk of layoff, this is the time to start considering alternative roles. Be honest with yourself. If you are severely under performing you may be at risk of being fired. Dont ignore the signs, try and understand why it isnt working and fix it and/or start looking for a more suitable job (they are not mutually exclusive). Dont wait until you are pushed as you will be in a worse position. Rule 2: Dont burn bridges, build them If there is an acrimonious split from an employer there can be a temptation to hit out, sever  ties and effectively burn bridges. Never do this, as you could easily have to collaborate with ex-colleagues or employers in the future and it will be much better for you if they are cooperative rather than wanting to sabotage your career. But, lets be more positive than this, you should view your current colleagues as key members of your current and future network who can help you get other jobs or win new business. Your future success can depend on the power of your network and how well you use it. So be proactive about your network, particularly when you know you may be leaving. Aim to settle any outstanding issues/disputes that you may have, particularly with senior staff. When you leave, write individual goodbyes and thank yous to your key contacts and a general one to the wider group and ensure it includes an invite for them to connect with you on LinkedIn. Join any ex-employee LinkedIn groups that may be available as you will find powerful allies in these groups too. Rule 3: Organize your references Identify potential referees and then ask them if they would be prepared to be a reference for future employment. Also, ask them if they would write a testimonial for your LinkedIn profile. Rule 4: Avoid leaving your employer in the lurch Always try to honor the notice period. Dont be tempted to leave early, (unless you can negotiate it), to join a new employer as doing this while at the same time leaving your current employer in the lurch will damage your reputation and relationship with your former employer. This is something you must avoid doing if you are to build bridges with them and engender goodwill so theyll potentially assist you in the future.
